Considering popular culture as a site of generation of meaning through consumption, the results were discussed with a focus on the process marked by negotiation of meaning over hegemony, or a shifting balance of forces between resistance from the subordinate and incorporation from the dominant. While South Korean Japanese-language teachers adopt Japanese popular culture to make students consent to educational content and more engaged in learning, such an approach also works to resist traditional teacher-centered education and political power fueling conflict between South Korea and Japan. Further more Japanese popular culture is a site of conflict between the hegemonic culture of both countries, where South Korean teachers decide to refuse or accommodate Japanese popular culture taking its necessity and adaptability with mainstream culture in South Korea into account and try to lead students to cultural relativism in understanding Japanese culture. 内容記述 | Using a modified grounded theory approach, this study analyzes data collected from interviews with 20 South Korean Japanese-language teachers who teach at high school or university to determine how they accept Japanese popular culture and use it in their coursework. Considering popular culture as a site of generation of meaning through consumption, the results were discussed with a focus on the process marked by negotiation of meaning over hegemony, or a shifting balance of forces between resistance from the subordinate and incorporation from the dominant.
