| 内容記述 | This paper examines a theoretical perspective of liminal ethnicity based on my ethnographic research on Chosŏnjok (Koreans in China) who have returned to South Korea. The transnational migration of Chosŏnjok from Korea to northeast China started in the late 19^th century, and continued to grow during the Japanese colonial period. The decolonization and the Cold War urged them to settle as an ethnic minority in China. But since the 1990’s, along with the globalization and the economic development of their “home country”, they have resumed their mobile lifestyle and continued to migrate to South Korea on a large scale. Although Chosŏnjok share the “same” language and culture with Korean people, they tend to form their ethnic enclaves in and around Seoul to protect themselves against discrimination and antagonism. My preliminary ethnographic research suggests that the ethnic identity of Chosŏnjok is characterized by two different dimensions : one is constructed by fixed images or stereotypes to differentiate themselves from the Korean nation based on minor differences; the other is concerned with the more flexible and negotiable strategies that frame daily social relations. This observation is congruent with the classic theory of F. Barth that the ethnic identity is dependent not on real cultural differences but on symbolic boundary maintenance. Thus, the identity of Chosŏnjok fluctuates between the assimilation into the mainstream of host society and the differentiation of their ethnicity despite a great amount of shared culture with the Korean nation. The significance of such symbolic boundary is led to further consideration about their liminal status between China and Korea. James Scott’s thesis on Zomia, or mountain tribes and nomads who have formed their unique identity by escaping from the staes of China and Southeast Asia, is very suggestive to develop my inquiry. In conclusion, it is suggested that the Zomia-like nomadity of Chosŏnjok may be a future symptom of fluidity of the modern nations including Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. | |||||
