内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 After the Boxer rebellion in China in 1900, some Japanese military officials were interested in the stunning power of the Chinese traditional boxing which enhanced Chinese nationalism and defense ability in those days.
Although, the Japanese officers misidentified the Chinese classic boxing as Shaolin Temple Boxing/少林寺拳法 and misunderstood the book for its theory and training as “Yijin Jing/易筋經”, the Japanese military reservists and their family members at the time obtained a copy of “Yiji jing” in the continental China, referred from the Boxer rebellion and introduced it to Japan in 1920 as “Higher Knowledge : Spirit and body training technique/Jinzu Jizai : Reiniku Shuyou/神通自在 霊肉修養”.
However, the above Chinese boxing which developed popular nationalism in China during the Boxer rebellion was not Shaolin Temple Boxing but Plum blossom martial art (梅花拳) and its textbook for its basic theory is not “Yiji jing”. Moreover, in the 1910s, there was a tendency of the times in which Taoist vocabulary was often used to explain bioenergetics in folk psychotherapy in Japan.
As the result, “Higher Knowledge : Spirit and body training technique” introduced multiple incoherent ideas such as the Boxer rebellion, the bio-energy from “the Spirit of the Universe”, martial arts, spiritual exercise and Zen Buddhism and developed confused explanations for “Yiji jing”.
Furthermore, Kōda Rohan/Shigeyuki (幸田露伴/成行, 1867 - 1947), one of the authors of above adaptation, interpreted “Yiji jing” as similar to “Yinfujing/陰符經”. At the same time and later, Japanese army reservists, including Mori Ōgai/Rintarō (森鷗外/林太郎, 1862 - 1922) also showed interest in “Yinfujing/陰符經”.
As the result of above misunderstandings, it gradually began to be misunderstood by some Japanese as “Yiji jing” and “Yinfujing” were the texts that had some relationships with a lot of notions such as Chinese alchemy, an ancient Chinese school of military, a bio-energy and spiritualism. For example, Rohan often published his Taoist theories which was similar to “Higher Knowledge : Spirit and body training technique” and included Chinese alchemy, spiritualism and yoga in the influential magazines in the 1930s and 1940s.
In 1947, Rohan died. Then, within the year, “Shorinji Kempo” (the Japanese reading of “Shaolin Temple Boxing/少林寺拳法”) organization was founded in Japan as a religious confraternity that performed a kind of gymnastic exercise called “Eki kin gyou/易筋行” (Original read is “Yijin Jing/易筋經”). Then, the organization started teaching people not “Eki kin gyou” but martial arts. In addition, in order to
grow the organization, they added new story that the founder of them learned the Chinese orthodox pugilistic skills during the Boxer rebellion when he worked as the special mission of Japanese secret military agency into their organization history.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the special Japanese concept in which “Yijin Jing/易筋經” and “Yinfujing/陰符經” have idiosyncratic relationships with Chinese alchemy, an unique way of health management in those days, oriental martial arts, classic intellection of ancient Chinese stratagem and spiritualism, occurred from 1900s to 1940s.
