| 内容記述 | The Umm Qais archaeological site is ancient city ruin on a plateau overlooking the Golan Heights and the Sea of Galilee, on the northwestern tip of the Irbid province of Jordan, on the border with Syria and Israel. The ancient name is “Gadara” and it is said that it played the role of the capital of Decapolis. It is a large-scale fortifed city ruin with many remains from the Hellenistic period (4th BC) to the Ottoman period (20th AD). In particular, it prospered most from the Roman period (1st BC to 4th AD) to the Byzantine period (5th to 15th AD), and it is characterized by the fact that the remains of that period are well preserved. It is said to have been severely destroyed by a large earthquake that struck the entire Mediterranean region in 738. It is currently on the provisional list of World Heritage Sites. Since 2005, the team of the Kokushikan University, Tokyo Japan, has been conducting a comprehensive survey and actual work for the conservation, restoration and utilization of Umm Qais archaeological site, as an international project with Jordan. Here, the results of the project regarding preservation, restoration and maintenance of the site. |
