| 内容記述 | Liminality is an innovative concept proposed by V. Turner to denote the fluid and creative dimension of human culture. It was extracted from the triadic structure of rites de passage Van Gennep discovered in the forest of diverse human traditions. The concept of liminality has inspired many scholars of various fields in the world, including Japan. The scope of influence can be summarized in three interrelated felds: symbolic anthropology, sociology of strangers, and psychotherapeutic practice. Despite the diversity of application, the concept tended to be used in a limited context, that is, premodern small-scale societies. But recently witnessed is a new trend of interdisciplinary studies that try to widen its applicability. Three characteristics can be observed from my review. 1 ）The concept of liminality is particularly useful in order to understand the nature of modernity, because modernity can be characterized as “permanent liminality.” 2 ）The meaning of liminality can be territorized in the history of Western thought. 3 ）Liminality has negative effects such as social chaos and catastrophes in modern contexts, in contrast to Turner’s optimistic perspective. The wide range of applicability of liminality, including its new development, is very suggestive to analyze the characteristics of East Asian modernity. The combination between the state policies and liminal lives of migrant workers has been the major drive of developmentalism in the region. This paper is a preliminary endeavor for a deeper analysis of this problem. |
