This is a preliminary but well attended case study, which spanned over the last ten years, with empirical supports from my informants in a series of co-examinations conducted in the Japanese music industry as well as in experimental workshops held in Japanese universities.\nFor many years, studies of Japanese pop music tended to focus on anecdotal descriptions of certain examples selected by their researchers. Aoyagi wanted to go beyond such an inferential shortcoming by putting together his findings from ethnographic co-ventures with agents in the musical industry, including his own students, which utilized “monad” as a guiding concept to qualitatively quantify vast amounts of musical samples in accordance with the “collective climate of an era” – one that corresponds to the social diversification of Japan itself during the past seventy years or so.
