| 内容記述 | It is observed that the Japan–South Korea relations have recently deteriorated to the worst level since the decolonization. It seems that the sharp conflicts surrounding the territorial dispute and history issues have fueled the public sentiment of both countries, and completed an Ouroboros cycle of Korean anti-Japanese sentiment and Japanese anti-Korean sentiment. This vicious circle is a product of nationalism, which has developed with the process of modernization, democratization, and globalization. I would like to seek this problem by elucidating the ‘origin’ of nationalism in Japan and Korea. The ‘nationalism trilogy’ of Liah Greenfeld provides an innovative perspective to develop this endeavor. She presented a new interpretation of the birth of nationalism in England, which predated modernization and industrialization. So it is nationalism that defines modernity, unlike modernist theories of nationalism. Nationalism is mainly based on three principles: equality (and liberty), self-definition (identity), and secularism. It was a response to the contradictions of traditional society as it was declining. Once adopted, nationalism became the major source of radical transformation in human history. The obsession of economic development, or capitalism, is a good example. The secular concept of equality, unlike religious ideal, drives man to endless competition, and promotes the prevalence of madness. This magnificent theoretical perspective of nationalism will help understand the conundrum in the Japan-Korea relationship. This paper summarizes the outlines of Greenfeld’s ‘nationalism trilogy’ for the next step of analysis. | |||||||||||||
